Biometric verification failures delay polling; EC directs reversion to manual voter registers

Election Related Verified Uganda (national) 15 Jan 2026 Severity: 3/5

On polling day, Electoral Commission chairperson Simon Byabakama directed polling stations to revert to manual voting after widespread failures of biometric voter verification machines, which the Daily Monitor said caused delays of more than four hours, especially in Kampala. President Museveni, after voting at Karo High School in Rwakitura, said some EC officials had not sent operators' biodata to the machines and that a probe would check whether this was deliberate.

A national event, not tied to one district.
