Cabinet suspends reduced allowances for privately sponsored medical interns, Health Minister tells Parliament

Policy & Legislation Verified Uganda (national) 18 Aug 2026 Severity: 1/5

Health Minister Dr Chris Baryomunsi told Parliament that Cabinet had suspended guidelines that would have limited privately sponsored medical interns to a meal allowance, so that all 2,490 interns in the cohort will receive the same monthly pay. He said the government had also dropped a proposal requiring students to complete internship before graduating, and extended the reporting deadline for interns to the end of the week. The Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, said the restored pay should only be a starting point and asked for the change to cover future cohorts.

A national event, not tied to one district.
