CDF Muhoozi Kainerugaba orders release of detained ex-CMI chief Maj Gen James Birungi

According to the Daily Monitor, Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced on his X account that he had ordered the release of former military intelligence chief Maj Gen James Birungi, citing forgiveness while describing the officer's alleged actions as serious crimes. The newspaper reports Birungi had been held at Makindye Military Police Detention Center since August 2025 and faces charges of treachery and security-related offences.
