Electoral Commission bans national flag, party colours and candidate portraits at polling stations

Election Related Verified Uganda (national) 12 Jan 2026 Severity: 1/5

At a media briefing in Kampala, EC chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama announced that voters may not carry the national flag, wear party-branded clothing, carry candidate portraits or display party colours at polling stations. He said the measure was meant to keep polling stations neutral. The Daily Monitor notes the directive came amid friction over NUP supporters' use of the national flag. The EC also confirmed that the biometric voter verification kits were mandatory for the polls.

A national event, not tied to one district.
