Electoral Commission unveils new biometric voter verification kits for 2026 elections

The Electoral Commission unveiled new Biometric Voter Verification Kits to verify voters by fingerprint or facial recognition before ballots are issued in the January 2026 elections. EC Chairperson Simon Byabakama said the kits would also identify ballots that did not go through verification so that they are not counted, and described the move as part of efforts to reduce impersonation and ballot-stuffing.
