High Court dismisses Besigye and Lutale application to halt treason trial

Justice & Court Rulings Verified Uganda (national) 8 Jul 2026 Severity: 2/5

High Court Criminal Division judge Emmanuel Baguma dismissed an application by Dr Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya to terminate the treason proceedings against them, ruling that their evidence of rights violations was not credible and that the application was intended to delay the trial. The accused allege they were abducted from Nairobi by Ugandan security operatives and detained incommunicado at Makindye Military Barracks; the respondents, including CDF Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba and the Attorney General, denied this. The judge ordered the trial to begin on 13 July 2026.

A national event, not tied to one district.
