High Court judge Gadenya rules bail mandatory after 180 days on remand without committal (murder/robbery case)

Justice & Court Rulings Verified Uganda (national) Jul 2026 (day not reported) Severity: 1/5

High Court judge Paul Gadenya Wolimbwa granted bail to a remand prisoner charged with aggravated robbery and murder, holding that Article 23(6)(c) of the Constitution obliges courts to release accused persons held more than 180 days without committal for trial. The judge rejected the DPP's arguments on flight risk and exceptional circumstances, and said bail terms must be within the applicant's reach; he set non-cash bail of Shs10 million.

A national event, not tied to one district.
