IGG directs URA to recover Shs38.7b in unpaid taxes from five gold exporters

Corruption & Abuse of Office Verified Uganda (national) 8 Jan 2026 Severity: 1/5

In a letter dated January 8 and seen by the Daily Monitor, the Inspector General of Government directed the URA Commissioner General to collect about Shs38.7b in tax arrears from five gold exporting companies and report back within 60 days. The IGG's findings attribute the gap partly to a presidential waiver of the gold export levy and to a 2023 ministerial request to halt new levy regulations. URA had not commented by press time.

A national event, not tied to one district.
