Inter-Religious Council leaders challenge Electoral Commission directive requiring voters to leave polling stations

Election Related Verified Uganda (national) Date not reported · first reported 3 Jan 2026 Severity: 1/5

At a meeting also attended by the Inspector General of Police, leaders of the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda questioned an Electoral Commission directive that voters leave polling stations right after voting, saying it conflicts with the legal provision allowing voters to stay 20 metres away. According to the Daily Monitor, EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama argued the rule would prevent congestion and that voters could return for the count, while the IGP said he had invited the military and Prisons Service to support police during the campaign.

A national event, not tied to one district.
