Labour minister orders all labour export companies to re-apply for licences within two months

Policy & Legislation Verified Uganda (national) 31 Aug 2026 Severity: 1/5

According to the Daily Monitor, Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde announced a re-evaluation of bilateral labour export agreements and recruitment agencies, and directed all registered labour export companies to re-apply for operating licences within two months or face suspension. The newspaper links the move to concerns over the exploitation of Ugandans abroad, including under Russia's Alabuga Start programme, and reports that State Minister Simon Mulongo said labour attachés would be posted to embassies.

A national event, not tied to one district.
