Lawyer petitions Electoral Commission to register with Data Protection Office over voters' data

Policy & Legislation Disputed Uganda (national) 7 Jan 2026 Severity: 1/5

Lawyer Michael Aboneka sent a petition to the Electoral Commission chairperson arguing that the EC handles voters' personal data without being registered with the Personal Data Protection Office, as he says the Data Protection and Privacy Act requires. He demanded immediate registration and said he would otherwise seek legal remedies. EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi said the Commission uses voters' data in line with the law.

A national event, not tied to one district.

Disputed: Aboneka says the EC processes voters' data unlawfully because it is not registered with the Data Protection Office; the EC says it uses the data in accordance with the law.
