Lawyers petition Constitutional Court to annul Public Order Management Act

Civic Space & Media Freedom Verified Uganda (national) 27 Nov 2020 Severity: 1/5

Three lawyers from the Network for Public Interest Lawyers (PILAC) filed a petition in the Constitutional Court against the Attorney General, asking it to annul the Public Order Management Act 2013. They argue that the Act gives security agencies excessive powers to prohibit public gatherings and breaches constitutional rights to assembly. One petitioner said they filed during the campaign period because Ugandans need freedom of assembly and association.

A national event, not tied to one district.
