Local government elections held nationwide amid low voter turnout and delays

Election Related Verified Uganda (national) 22 Jan 2026 Severity: 1/5

Elections for city mayors, district chairpersons, municipal mayors and councillors took place across the country. The Daily Monitor reports low turnout at polling stations in many areas, including Wakiso, Masaka, Kasese, Masindi, Mbale, Arua, Lira, Jinja and Kabale, with some stations opening late because the required quorum of witnesses was not present. Some voters and candidates quoted attributed the low turnout to voter fatigue and events following the earlier presidential and parliamentary polls.

A national event, not tied to one district.
