More than 800 LC I chairperson candidates unopposed in Greater Masaka and Greater Luwero as village polls held

Election Related Disputed Uganda (national) 28 Jul 2026 Severity: 1/5

According to URN, more than 800 candidates in the Greater Masaka and Greater Luwero sub-regions were set to take office unopposed as LC I chairpersons on the day of the nationwide village elections, including over 500 in Greater Masaka and about 275 in Nakaseke, Nakasongola and Luwero, where all were NRM candidates. NRM Deputy Secretary General Rose Namayanja Nsereko attributed this to opposition parties failing to field candidates, while Luwero District Chairperson Erastus Kibirango alleged intimidation by state security operatives and Masaka opposition leader Ronald Kasekende alleged that village registers were tampered with to remove opposition supporters.

A national event, not tied to one district.

Disputed: The NRM says candidates were unopposed because the opposition failed to field candidates, while opposition leaders allege intimidation by security operatives and tampering with village registers.
