Uganda Governance Monitor
In a televised national address, President Yoweri Museveni said the government would compensate families of people killed and those who lost property in the recent protests over Robert Kyagulanyi's arrest, but not families of those he described as rioters. Citing a report he had received, he said 54 people died, 32 of them rioters, some from stray bullets. He directed an audit of the deaths and said officers seen in video clips shooting or beating non-violent people should be identified and held accountable.
