Nine National Unity Platform supporters who had been charged before the General Court Martial with treachery and unlawful possession of ammunition were released under the Amnesty Act after nearly six years in detention without trial, according to the Daily Monitor. Defence lawyer Benjamin Katana called the process irregular, saying the detainees had to drop their lawyers for UPDF legal representation, and NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi said the case had stayed before the military court despite a Supreme Court ruling. The Amnesty Commission's chief legal adviser, Nathan Twinomugisha, said the applicants had apologised and met the legal requirements.
A national event, not tied to one district.
Disputed: Defence lawyer Benjamin Katana and NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi say the amnesty process was irregular and ignored a Supreme Court ruling, while the Amnesty Commission says it was properly followed.
