NUP leader Kyagulanyi announces he has temporarily left Uganda after nearly two months in hiding

Civic Space & Media Freedom Verified Uganda (national) 14 Mar 2026 Severity: 2/5

National Unity Platform leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) said in a statement on Saturday that he had temporarily left Uganda after nearly two months in hiding following the 2026 presidential election. He said soldiers had raided his home in Magere shortly after the election and that security forces had since searched for him, raided colleagues' homes and dismissed police officers assigned to his campaign. The UPDF denied that recent checkpoints in the Kampala Metropolitan Area were aimed at him, saying no one was looking for him, according to ChimpReports.

A national event, not tied to one district.
