NUP petitions DPP over about 40 supporters still held on military court charges

Civic Space & Media Freedom Verified Uganda (national) 18 May 2026 Severity: 2/5

NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya petitioned the Director of Public Prosecutions over the failure to transfer the files of about 40 party supporters from the General Court Martial to civilian courts, despite the Supreme Court's January 2025 ruling barring military trials of civilians. According to the Daily Monitor, he asked for the charges to be dropped and alleged that court martial officials were pressing detainees to sign statements dating their offences to 2026. A DPP spokesperson confirmed the petition was received on 20 May and said it would be handled through normal procedures.

A national event, not tied to one district.
