OPM and Ministry of Water and Environment issue nationwide flood and landslide alert over February rains

The Independent reports that the Ministry of Water and Environment and the Office of the Prime Minister warned of continuing heavy, out-of-season rainfall through late February 2026. A letter from the Commissioner for Disaster Preparedness, Davis Mwenyi, said low-lying areas faced flash floods and the Elgon and Kigezi highlands faced landslides, and directed district disaster committees to inspect high-risk zones and activate contingency plans.
