Parliament grants Budadiri East MP Julius Nakiyi leave to prepare bill reviewing mobile money taxes

Policy & Legislation Single source Uganda (national) Date not reported · first reported 21 Jul 2026 Severity: 1/5

According to Uganda Radio Network, Budadiri East MP Julius Nakiyi has been granted leave by Parliament to prepare legislation reviewing taxes on mobile money transactions. Nakiyi argues that the withdrawal levy taxes people's own money and works against the government's digital financial inclusion goals. The move follows recent Income Tax Act amendments introducing a 10 percent final withholding tax on telecom agents' commissions, which civil society groups say will raise costs for customers.

A national event, not tied to one district.
