Parliament grants MP Dennis Namara leave to introduce bill on election of Leader of the Opposition

Policy & Legislation Verified Uganda (national) 8 Jul 2026 Severity: 1/5

Parliament passed by voice vote a motion granting Buyaga West MP Dennis Namara leave to introduce the Administration of Parliament (Amendment) Bill, 2026. According to ChimpReports, the bill would let opposition and independent MPs take part in electing the Leader of the Opposition, currently NUP's Joel Ssenyonyi, and change how Parliamentary Commissioners and committee leaders are selected. The bill follows public calls by CDF Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba for Ssenyonyi's removal, though its proponents say it aims to broaden participation.

A national event, not tied to one district.
