President Museveni calls for review of the Protection of Sovereignty Bill, 2026

In a statement on 30 April 2026, President Museveni said the Sovereignty Bill as drafted strayed into private money transfers, remittances and church donations, and that it was not the bill he had initiated in Cabinet. He said he had asked Hamson Obua and chairpersons of the relevant parliamentary committees to limit it to sovereignty in policy decision-making. The Daily Monitor reported the statement followed calls by religious leaders, civil society, opposition politicians and others for the bill to be shelved.
