Public Service Minister tells Parliament committee no immediate pay rise for striking teachers

Policy & Legislation Single source Uganda (national) 2 Oct 2025 Severity: 1/5

According to Nile Post, Public Service Minister Wilson Muruli Mukasa told Parliament's Committee on Local Government that the government could not raise teachers' salaries for now because of financial constraints, and said disparities would be addressed in phases. The government has given striking teachers a one-week ultimatum to return to class, with the minister warning that those who do not report back will be treated as having abandoned their posts. UNATU, whose members have been on strike for about three weeks over salary increments promised in 2019, says a more immediate plan is needed.

A national event, not tied to one district.
