Civic Space & Media Freedom Verified Uganda (national) 1 Oct 2026 Severity: 1/5

During a plenary session of Parliament, Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi pressed the government to account for missing citizens, citing leaked footage of opposition activist Sam Mugumya and other unresolved cases, and demanded that those held extrajudicially be produced in court or released. Government Chief Whip Dr Jane Ruth Aceng said the Ministry of Internal Affairs had received the opposition's list and asked for two weeks to audit detention records. Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth directed the government to present a full report within two weeks and promised a dedicated debate on human rights.

A national event, not tied to one district.
