Starlink restricts its satellite internet service in Uganda following Uganda Communications Commission directives

Civic Space & Media Freedom Verified Uganda (national) 1 Jan 2026 Severity: 2/5

According to the Daily Monitor, Starlink introduced a service restriction tool for Uganda on 1 January 2026 after concerns raised by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), and said in a letter to UCC that its local subsidiary is not yet licensed. The company said terminals used in Uganda had been bought abroad and imported without authorisation, and that no active terminals now operate in the country; the move came ahead of the mid-January general elections amid public fears of internet restrictions.

A national event, not tied to one district.
