Policy & Legislation Verified Uganda (national) 3 Aug 2026 Severity: 1/5

At the inauguration of a new board for the Walimu Co-operative Union in Kampala, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives directed it to recover at least 80 percent of more than Shs11 billion in defaulted loans by 31 March 2027 and to revive dormant teachers' Saccos. According to the Daily Monitor, ministry commissioner Robert Bariyo Barigye said only 39 of 385 registered teachers' Saccos are active and that the funds were lost through poorly managed lending.

A national event, not tied to one district.
