UCC announces nationwide enforcement against unlicensed public Wi-Fi providers

Policy & Legislation Verified Uganda (national) 7 Jul 2026 Severity: 1/5

The Uganda Communications Commission said in a statement that it would carry out targeted enforcement, with licensed internet providers, operators and government agencies, against people and businesses offering public Wi-Fi without a licence. The regulator directed unlicensed operators to stop immediately or obtain licences, citing consumer protection and cybersecurity. The Independent notes that a UCC director had said in June that the Commission would not stop consumers reselling internet access through neighbourhood hotspots.

A national event, not tied to one district.
