Civic Space & Media Freedom Verified Uganda (national) 13 Jan 2026 Severity: 5/5

The Uganda Communications Commission directed all mobile network operators and internet service providers to suspend public internet access, the sale and registration of new SIM cards, and outbound data roaming to One Network Area countries from 6pm on 13 January 2026 until further notice, according to a letter seen by the Daily Monitor. UCC executive director Nyombi Thembo said the measure followed a recommendation by the Inter-Agency Security Committee and was meant to curb misinformation, electoral fraud and incitement during the election period; a limited exclusion list was set for essential services.
