Uganda Law Society criticises media restrictions and urges fair trial safeguards in Besigye treason case

Civic Space & Media Freedom Verified Uganda (national) 30 Jul 2026 Severity: 1/5

In a statement, Uganda Law Society president Isaac Ssemakadde said the society was concerned by Dr Kizza Besigye's collapse in court and criticised last-minute guidelines that, in its view, limited media access, photography and live broadcasting of the trial. ULS urged the Judiciary to review the restrictions, ensure independent medical care for Besigye, and decide pending applications on a stay of proceedings and alleged interference with the defence before continuing.

A national event, not tied to one district.
