Uganda Law Society declares UCC election internet shutdown illegal

Civic Space & Media Freedom Single source Uganda (national) Jan 2026 (day not reported) Severity: 1/5

The Uganda Law Society said the UCC acted outside the law in suspending internet access. ULS Vice President Anthony Asiimwe said the UCC Act allows such a suspension only after a state of emergency is declared, which did not happen, and that the shutdown violated the constitutional right of access to information.

A national event, not tied to one district.
