Uganda Medical Association and medical interns petition court over withdrawn allowances

Policy & Legislation Disputed Uganda (national) 22 Apr 2026 Severity: 1/5

The Uganda Medical Association and the Federation for Uganda Medical Interns filed a petition challenging the government's withdrawal of allowances for some medical interns, Senior House Officers and refugee intern doctors, their lawyer Jane Namaganda Kibira said. The petitioners argue the withdrawal is discriminatory and violates their rights, and also challenge the interns' working conditions. Ministry of Health spokesperson Emmanuel Ainebyona said those affected are either already on the government payroll or are non-Ugandans, and that lawful pay is being made.

A national event, not tied to one district.

Disputed: The medics' lawyer says the allowance withdrawal is discriminatory and unlawful, while the Ministry of Health says those affected are not entitled to the allowances.
