Uganda receives first eight third-country deportees from the US under Safe Third Country agreement

International Relations Official claim Uganda (national) 1 Apr 2026 Severity: 1/5

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Vincent Bagiire Waiswa said in a Friday statement that eight third-country nationals of African origin, whose US asylum claims had been rejected, arrived in Uganda from the United States on 1 April 2026 under the 2025 Safe Third Country agreement. He said their protection requests will be handled and their details withheld for privacy; according to the Daily Monitor, critics including the Uganda Law Society have called the deal illegal and secretive.

A national event, not tied to one district.

Official claim: These are the figures given by Ministry of Internal Affairs (spokesperson Simon Mundeyi); they could not be checked independently.
