UHRC chairperson Mariam Wangadya appears before Parliament's Legal Committee over governance concerns at commission

Corruption & Abuse of Office Disputed Uganda (national) 23 Jul 2026 Severity: 1/5

Uganda Human Rights Commission chairperson Mariam Fauzat Wangadya appeared before Parliament's Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, which was examining allegations that over 200 complaint files were closed without due process and that the commission had not met since March 2026. Wangadya denied the allegations, said the dismissals were collective tribunal decisions, and accused three commissioners of a smear campaign and of collecting allowances without attending sessions. The committee, which had heard the three commissioners the previous day, ordered the commission to reappear on 24 July.

A national event, not tied to one district.

Disputed: Commissioners Basaliza, Nsubuga and Atuhaire told the committee Wangadya had been absent for months, leaving a leadership vacuum; Wangadya denies sidelining them and says they skipped tribunal sessions after collecting allowances.
