UN rights chief Volker Türk raises alarm over civic space in Uganda; government rejects claims

International Actions Disputed Uganda (national) 30 Jul 2026 Severity: 1/5

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said his office had information that at least 50 opposition leaders and supporters, five human rights defenders and five journalists faced alleged violations since the January elections, including arbitrary detention and torture. Uganda's UN ambassador Adonia Ayebare rejected the statement on X as a misrepresentation and said the government would respond.

A national event, not tied to one district.

Disputed: Türk says authorities are increasingly targeting dissent; Ambassador Ayebare calls the claims falsehoods and the government says its measures enforce the law and protect security.
