Senator Jim Risch, chairman of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, wrote to President Museveni on 22 January calling for an independent investigation into the election results and reported killings and rights violations, and into the detention of Dr Sarah Bireete. According to the Daily Monitor, he urged the US administration to review its security relationship with Uganda, including whether sanctions against specific actors such as CDF Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba are warranted.
