UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima said she raised the continued detention of her husband, opposition politician Dr Kizza Besigye, in a meeting with Kenyan President William Ruto on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. According to ChimpReports, she described Besigye's removal from Nairobi in November 2024 as an abduction and his prosecution as political persecution, a characterisation the Ugandan government disputes, saying he faces criminal proceedings under Ugandan law.
