Uganda Governance Monitor
At a district council meeting, Budaka LC5 chairperson Anthony Kateu said education officers had collected UNEB registration fees from private school proprietors and had candidates registered as UPE pupils at government schools, leaving the district owing UNEB Shs34.982 million. He said former District Inspector of Schools Robert Wandera had been interdicted pending investigations and that he had asked the CAO to start disciplinary proceedings against the acting District Education Officer, Richard Wako. Both officers denied the allegations, calling them a political witch-hunt, according to the Daily Monitor.
Disputed: Chairperson Kateu says education officers took UNEB fees and misregistered candidates; Wandera and Wako deny it and call it a political witch-hunt, with Wako saying his own office found the discrepancies.
