UWA park boundary operations destroy crops in Bududa sub-counties around Mt Elgon National Park

Environmental Issues Disputed Bududa 2026 (month not reported) Severity: 3/5

Uganda Wildlife Authority officials have been enforcing the Mt Elgon National Park boundary in Bushiyi, Bundesi, Bukalasi and Bubiita sub-counties, and residents accuse them of using disproportionate force and destroying crops. A resident of Bukalasi said more than 40 gardens of over 40 households had been destroyed; UWA said about 1,500 acres had been encroached and that it has a mandate to protect the park.

Disputed: Residents say UWA used disproportionate force and destroyed their crops, while UWA says the land was encroached and it is enforcing a legally established boundary.
