Congolese family refuses body of relative who died in Ugandan police custody at Busanza border

International Relations Verified Kisoro 13 May 2026 Severity: 2/5

The Daily Monitor reports that when the Kisoro District Police Commander tried to hand over the body of a Congolese man who died in police custody, his relatives at the Busanza border post refused to accept it. The relatives are demanding that the Ugandan government pay for the burial and compensate his dependants; they turned down Shs500,000 raised by business owners in Mupaka Town Council as too little. After about two hours of talks, police took the body back to the Kisoro Hospital mortuary.
