Congolese man dies in custody at Nyabwishenya Police Post, Kisoro; officers arrested for secret burial

According to Kigezi police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, a 30-year-old Congolese man detained at Nyabwishenya Police Post on a charge of threatening violence was found dead in custody on 7 May 2026, after civilians had allegedly assaulted him the night before. Police said two constables and a corporal, together with two civilians, buried the body secretly at night on land belonging to Bufumbiro North MP Nizeyimana Kamara and told relatives he had been released. The five were arrested and held at Kisoro Police Station, and police said the body was being exhumed for a postmortem.
