Ebola screening stepped up at overcrowded Nyakabande Transit Centre in Kisoro as Congolese refugee arrivals rise

Humanitarian & Crises Verified Kisoro 25 May 2026 Severity: 2/5

The Nyakabande Transit Centre commandant told the Daily Monitor that authorities had introduced mandatory handwashing, screening of new arrivals for Ebola symptoms and re-screening before relocation, amid fears of cross-border transmission from DR Congo. He said the centre was hosting 1,775 refugees against a capacity of about 850 and was short of staff and protective equipment after development partners cut staff. Officials said about 1,200 refugees would be moved to Nakivale settlement in Isingiro District.
