Enforcement officers assaulted as kiosk demolition clashes with mayor's group in Kumi Municipality

Violence & Conflict Disputed Kumi 30 Mar 2026 Severity: 3/5

A municipal operation to clear kiosks from road reserves in Kumi Municipality turned violent when, according to Principal Executive Engineer Henry Mateega, a group allegedly led by the Mayor stopped the demolition of a kiosk said to belong to him, and several enforcement officers were assaulted. Mayor Richard Ochom defended his actions, saying traders lack alternative space and that his kiosk was selectively targeted; police reinforcements were called in.

Disputed: The municipal engineer accuses the mayor's group of disrupting a lawful operation, while Mayor Richard Ochom says the eviction is unfair and selectively targeted his kiosk.
