Government officials criticise Masaka Diocese priest over sermon urging vote for change

Civic Space & Media Freedom Verified Kyotera 12 Nov 2020 Severity: 1/5

A video of Fr Richard Mugisha of Bisanje Parish, Masaka Diocese, urging people to vote for change and criticising President Museveni and government officials spread on social media. Presidential Assistant Faruk Kirunda accused the priest of mixing religion with partisan politics, and Media Centre head Ofwono Opondo said it was not a priest's role to tell people whom to vote for. The priest confirmed the message and said he gave it in Kyotera District; the diocese said it would issue a statement.
