Kabale district directs artisanal iron ore miners to sell only to licensed operators, warns of truck impoundment

Policy & Legislation Verified Kabale 16 Oct 2026 Severity: 1/5

Kabale District Natural Resources Officer Henry Tumwesigye told artisanal miners at a stakeholder meeting at Nyakatoma Hill, Kamuganguzi Sub-county, to sell iron ore only to licence holders in the areas where it is mined, according to the Daily Monitor. He warned that trucks carrying ore bought without the licence holder's consent would be impounded. Some miners had argued they should be free to sell to any buyer, and a resident questioned a licence issued on land residents say is under a government lease.
