Justice & Court Rulings Single source Wakiso 3 Jul 2026 Severity: 2/5

The Kira Chief Magistrate's Court granted cash bail of Shs650,000 to journalist and commentator Timothy Kalyegira, who is charged with two counts of broadcasting without a licence under the Uganda Communications Act over his online platforms. According to ChimpReports, the State opposed bail, arguing among other things that his social media following could intimidate witnesses. He had been remanded to Luzira Prison after his first appearance, and the case resumes on 4 August 2026.
