Uganda expels France 24 correspondent and two RFI journalists who came to cover the election

Civic Space & Media Freedom Verified Wakiso 20 Jan 2026 Severity: 2/5

France 24's East Africa correspondent Bastien Renouil and two Radio France Internationale journalists were expelled from Uganda despite carrying the required work documents, according to the Daily Monitor. One RFI journalist was refused entry at the border; the others were escorted to Entebbe Airport and left on 20 January. ICT Minister Chris Baryomunsi called the deportations administrative and denied any breach of press freedom, while Reporters Without Borders said the journalists were made to fill in a form normally used for suspects.
