About 70 Congolese Martyrs Day pilgrims held in Kasese for Ebola screening, pilgrimage suspended

Humanitarian & Crises Verified Kasese 16 May 2026 Severity: 2/5

According to the Daily Monitor, about 70 pilgrims who walked from Butembo-Beni in eastern DRC were held at St Michael Church-Kabuyiri in Kasese on Saturday while district surveillance teams screened them for Ebola. The organising committee's health chairperson, Fr Richard Sausi, said they had crossed before the outbreak was announced and were screened again after the Ministry of Health's confirmation; the article says authorities suspended their onward journey to Namugongo pending the results.
