Civic Space & Media Freedom Single source Kampala 1 Jul 2026 Severity: 1/5

The Independent (URN) reported that Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale, accused in a treason case, filed a human rights enforcement application in the High Court Criminal Division naming the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and the Attorney General as respondents. They ask the court to nullify the decision declaring their lawyer Martha Karua a prohibited immigrant, to restrain the prosecution of Erias Lukwago, and to award damages, arguing their rights to a fair hearing and to counsel of choice were violated. The court has not yet set a hearing date.
