Buganda Road Court defers judgment for 12 EACOP student activists, who are returned to Luzira

Justice & Court Rulings Verified Kampala 16 Mar 2026 Severity: 2/5

According to the Daily Monitor, the Buganda Road Court put off judgment in the public nuisance case against 12 environmental activists from Rooted in Resistance (formerly Students Against EACOP Uganda) because the trial magistrate was not on duty, and adjourned the matter to April 10. The activists, arrested in August the previous year after a protest at Stanbic Bank headquarters in Kampala, were taken back to Luzira Prisons. Their lawyer said the prolonged remand had cost the students their studies and suggested it was meant to deter similar protests.
