Court of Appeal sets aside Shs 200m torture compensation awarded to convict against the state

Justice & Court Rulings Single source Kampala 14 Oct 2026 Severity: 1/5

A three-judge Court of Appeal panel in Kampala allowed the state's appeal and quashed a High Court order that the government pay Shs 200 million to a convicted man who said a warder had beaten him at Kitalya Prison. The judges held that the High Court judge acted without jurisdiction because the alleged torture was never tried in properly brought proceedings and neither the warder nor the Attorney General was heard; the man's sentence was left in place.
